nearly free lessons

regarding "nearly free lessons". I teach a kids class twice a month in my home, 5 to 15 kids.
I charge $10 for 2- 30min. classes (which finishes one project) Last month was a coil pot, this month we will be doing a clay tile with leave impressions from my garden. I would not want to be a full time teacher, but twice a month is fun for me as well as them.
I live in a VERY small town (1200 I believe) and there is nothing for kids to do. Also, I like bringing the world of clay/art to them at a young age. This goes back to growing up with an "artsy/creative" cousin who could sew anything, draw anything, paint anything, etc.... I was in Choir and she was the artist and the two never shall meet! Even in college my cousin and friends tried to get me to take a pottery class and I wouldn't even go near the art buildings. I was so intimidated by my cousins talents. So, at age 31, after having 2 babies I was flipping through the yellow pages looking for something to DO with my non-mommy time and ended up taking a pottery class. Made 3 small pots the first night and was AMAZED!
So, short story long, that is why I like to expose kids to the world of clay/art. I wish someone would have done the same thing for me in the small town that I grew up in ! Also, I am not a production potter, so usually the kids projects help to finish filling up my kiln.

Hey Kim, I think that's great! Glad you figured it out
at 31!
I think this is what it's all about. Many of you are
correct on the free issue. In the past, my freebees
were abused. Now i am careful and the results are
better. My husband Carl has often offered free care
for patients. Especially if the patients are children
- and utterly miserable from their allergies, but my
husband would rarely see the free ones back: too much
work for mom. He charges a small amount and they are
faithful. It doesn't make any sense, but that has been
our experience in 3 locations over 32 years. Odd.
Nevertheless: this is how I do it now, a snip at a
time, while charging royally for music lessons. Eh.
Have a good one, enjoy your kids-they're but a
fleeting moment.
