Steve: A great description of Queenston shale- a wild card.
Steve and I share living on the Niagara Escarpment which stretches from
Queenston, NY to Tobermory on the Bruce Peninsula. You could walk on a
beautifully maintained trail called The Bruce Trail from the front door of
my pottery for about 300 kilometers to the front door of Steve's pottery.
the escarpment rock I get at the local quarry is referred to them as "rock
flour" and I can get it for $75 for 10,000 lbs or a 50 lb bag is free. Lab
tests show it to be 98% whiting. I have not bought whiting since this
discovery.
As for the Queenston shale it is really very similiar to Redart. We use it
as a terra sig on porcelain for the woodkiln, under and over shinos, a
colourant for celedon ash glazes and used as a slip it produces a handsome
temmoku under the ash celedon.. I prefer it to red iron as a colourant for
the very reason of it being a "wild card"- less refined.
Wild card glazes are exciting. I wish Steve harrison would pipe up. He wrote
a great piece about making the best possible work with materials that are
available in your backyard.
Here I am lost in my own backyard again.
Cheers,
Tony

I've used terra-sig between layers of maiolica glaze for a really
spectacular effect. The terra-sig wrinckles under the glaze and makes a
wonderful texture. I think I've shown you a cup like this. I'll have to
put a picture up on my site.
