Gary Holt will be giving a two day workshop July 30-31 here in the Ithaca
area of New York. This workshop will cover the use of soluble metals on
porcelain and over raw glazes. This is a watercolor type technique that can
be used at any temperature and has great potential on tiles as well as on
pottery. Gary will also do a session on shinos - he has a beautiful method
of firing shinos which you can see, along with the solubles, on his website:
www.garyholt.com . Gary has been working with a
designer who commissions him to make tiles that are shino glazed. If these
tiles are as lovely as the cup I have that Gary made, this is something more
should think about doing. There is no need to try to compete with
commercial tile companies - just do what they cannot do. As many of you
know, Arne Ase's book Watercolor on Porcelain is no longer available and
will not be reprinted. Gary is working on a book of his own about this
method and will have a handout that will be a precursor to his book. There
are a few local potters who put other potters up when they come from out of
town for workshops so if you would like to attend and would need a place to
stay, contact me. Even if you cannot make the workshop, do go to Gary's
website - his work is really incredible. I have more information - a flier
- if you want to know more.
