the alarm feature on digital kilns

For digital kiln owners:

Do you ever use the alarm on your digital controller? If so, what do you
find most useful about it?

By the way, you can use an inexpensive baby monitor to hear the alarm from
another room. Or you can wire a relay to the auxiliary output on the back of
the controller and use that relay to power an external alarm. But the
simplest method is the baby monitor.

Yes, I do use the alarm. I have a Skutt and set it in the program to
go off at 1000 degrees. I'm firing in a garage that is about 20 yards
from my house and if I step out on the front porch, I can just barely
hear the alarm pinging. I know it's time to walk out and pull the
wedge from the top and lower the lid. Works for me.

Hi Arnold,

No, I do not use the alarm, mainly because I would not hear it as I am not in
the same area, so would not hear it. I just go down and keep checking the
temperature and, later during the firing, the witness cones. Still have a hard
time seeing those, in spite of all the tips on Clayart.

Hi Arnold,
I have never used the alarm on my digital controller and I will be very
interested to hear what other people do with theirs.
I've thought about using my 4th home video security camera, which is
not hooked up or pointed at anything right now, as a kiln monitor. It
has a built-in microphone and speaker.
