I recently returned from another trip to China.
In Jingdezhen our leader "Po" took us to the district where ceramic
decals are sold in many little shops. The members of our group ranged
up and down both sides of the avenue buying decals which are
amazingly cheap.
They are of almost any imaginable Chinese decoration, each shop
having a different selection.
Most of the decals came on thin sheets of decal overcoat that have
somehow been removed from the substrate on which they are made and
sold interleaved with tissue paper. They are roughly 16 X 22 inches
in size and most have many small images on each sheet.
I stocked up on dragons in great variety.
There were some decals on conventional water-slide paper but most
were of the unsupported type.
Since I've got back, I have been trying them out. I found that since
they are not on water-slide paper it is necessary to use glue to hold
them on the ware.
I used a dilute solution of Itoya O-Glue, a clear paper glue sold in
art and stationary stores.
I found that firing at cone 018 or 017 was about right and it is
important to rub or roll down the decal thoroughly and dry it well
before firing. They are applied to a pre-fired glazed surface, and
usually not glazed over since at the temperature of clear glazes,
about cone 06, you begin to loose color in the reds and oranges and
yellows.
