you will note the the shape of the loading area is different from the
fire box. donovan used a wood form for the fire box and of course
used arch/wedge bricks to make the arch perfect.
a sand mold was used for the chamber....we only used straights for
this arch. the castable holds it all together. that is why we wanted
to salt it. just a bit of help. glaze the inside.
note:
we used three pieces of carpet...just cut to fit inside the kiln
for loading. it was pulled out as the kiln filled. that is why the
gals are loading in shorts. when the kiln is unloaded, we put one
of the pieces back in to keep knees from scraping and we know that
fire box will be rough after a few firings.
