Charan: I eagerly visited your web site. But I was disappointed to =
find
that "Gallery" and "Studio Tour" both took me to the gallery. I wanted =
to
visit your studio. I am about to get to build my own studio and love
looking at other potter's studios. Gay Judson in San Antonio

Well, Congratulations on attaining your goal of having a studio completed to
your design. It looks great-I enjoyed seeing the pots in the gallery too.

I'm never posting a picture of where I work...I have so much STUFF!!!! But
to be fair, I have been accumulating it since 1981. And I do use it all, or
plan to, or did, or know what it's for, haha.

Hi Charan -

I went to your website - lovely. One thing, when I click on "studio tour"
it takes me to the gallery - same as when I click on "gallery."

I love the platter I bought last year at the Hollywood Schoolhouse -
mottled/amber/orange satiny....what is the glaze? Do you fire oxy or redux?

Thanks.

Yea, me too. Don't you love it when it's dark and the slugs
are out? step...squaeeesh....yeeeuuuk !!!

I solved this problem with an old water heater that didn't
leak for $5 at a yard sale, a 12V RV water pump for $10
from same, $20 plastic laundry sink, an old car battery
charger I had laying around and a bucket for the drain.
Imagine hose from water heater drain to pump to sink, with
bucket underneath for drain.

The nifty part is I made up a foot switch from an electrical
box and a push button switch to activate the pump. Now I
just walk up to the sink with mud up to the elbows, step on
the switch and water flows.

I fill the water heater tank with a garden hose every couple
weeks to once a month depending on how much work I am
doing.

And for those occasional cold spells we have I can just
drain the whole thing and not worry about it freezing up.

Thanks Vicki,
I remember you now. You were so excited to buy my platter. You had made my
day.
The glaze is a nutmeg glaze fired in Cone 6 oxdn. Most of my glazes on the
website are Cone 6 oxdn except for the obvious carbon trap shinos. The
reddish platter in the first album is orange red glaze from Michael
Bailey's book sprayed on a matt glaze. None of the pieces I have done in
those glazes look like this platter. I always mistake it as Cone 10
reduction as well. So is the teapot with the two cups on the front of the
album. Almost everyone has mistaken them for reduction pieces. Those were
commercial glazes I sprayed on and a friend bought it because she couldn't
believe it was oxdn looking unless you looked at the bottom.
I try to achieve that look and it has been very exciting. I have yet to
experiment with Ron and John's glazes. Thats going to be my focus for some
time now.
well take care and check out the site now... it is up and running.

Wow. It looks so nice and clean!

Looks like a very efficient layout. Sometime in the future, it might
be good to move the kiln into another space and add a big sink with a
claytrap. But for now, it looks absolutely idyllic.

I have my slab roller in the middle of the space too and find that it
becomes my favorite workbench. (I still have to dismantle it and
readjust the cables one again.) Also, I have my wheel to one side,
but facing the wall because I have a long el-cheapo mirror adjacent
to the wheel so that I can check how the form is looking as I throw.
At one side is a low shelf with removable batts and the other side is
an old antique table that holds all my tools. I do have a window to
look out of once in a while too.

Cue Homer Simpson's voice: "Ummmm, indoor plumbing."

Who has no indoor plumbing and spends time talking between the
studio/barn and the house to use the bathroom. I also have to haul
water in big buckets into and out of the studio, so I appreciate the
separating-the-buckets-saga as well.

Thanks for the studio tour, Charan! It looks great.

Where do you get those large storage bins for glaze materials?

I got those bins at home depot. They are normally for $10 each but they
were on sale for ~$7. They are very strong and their lid stays open when
you remove the chemicals. I would suggest, putting planks between them
before you stack. That distributes the weight rather than putting all the
weight on the lid of the one below. Or better yet build shelving for it.
