Dear Vince,
The ancient style wheel was probably brought ot the Iberian Peninsula
by the Celts. Hence the name. I am not deducting that the Celts
invented this wheel Only that it is called a "celtic" wheel on the
Iberian peninsula.
There were also wheels of this type in the enthnographic museum in
Zagreb in Croatia.
The wheel looks like it has four table legs underneath the wheel
head which is wooden.
The legs are used to spin the wheel when the potter gives the legs a
good pull. The wheel spins for a significant time allowing the potter
to throw
and pull up walls. When it slows down, the potter gives another yank
on the legs. There was a version of an early wheel in the museum in
Yerevan in Armenia...much closer to the original site of the wheel's
first use about 4700 years ago.
