Well, it may be that none of us aol users are getting
ClayArt. When this happened several years ago, I
established a yahoo account so that I had a place to
go to check on ClayArt.

On Sunday, I contacted the aol online "help" and asked
what was happening. I won't go into the details of
more than one VERY dissatisfying encounter, but I was
told that it is possible that some aol user may have
told aol that mail from clayart is spam and therefore
NONE of us can get it. I could not believe it. But I
rewrote my understanding and was told I had it
straight.

Then I was told that the moderator or whomever could
go to some url and test to see whether messages are
going through. However, I was unable to cut and past
the information. AFter the session, it appeared that I
should have been able to print out the information,
but aol got hung up and I couldn't save it, print it.
or anything else, so the information was lost. So what
else is new?

Oh, and I created a new screen name and tried to join
clayart, but that hasn't worked either. It seems we
are totally hosed!

So, my question is - does anyone have both a MAC and a
PC on one of the DSLs? I am especially interested in
SBC. I have both a PC and MAC and want to be able to
access the DSL on both. I've asked some vendors and
they send me off to the techies. Is it really going to
be so difficult that I have to speak to a techie?

Thanks for your help.

Shula,

Get a router with wireless. You will be able to use both computers as the router will also have ports for ethernet.

It's not such a terrible thing to speak to the
techies. When you connect a DSL or cable modem you'll
likely need some hand-holding if you're not
comfortable with computer stuff anyway, so talking to
the techs is a great way to find out if the tech
support is any good or if you'll be talking to
"Albert" from Bangalore on his first day on the job.

The quick answer, though, is that modern computers --
Mac and PC (and Unix and Linux and so on) use
interchangable internet connections. Local wireless
networks and wired ethernet systems hook up to both
just fine. You should check with the provider before
signing up, though, to make sure that all of the
various driver software will be provided in all needed
formats. IIRC, when I got DSL (Qwest), it was shipped
with Windows and Mac drivers only -- no Unix/Linux
option.

I haven't dealt with AOL in many years, and I don't
know what's going on there, but one thing you can
always to to untether yourself from any particular
system is to use a public server (as you did before
with Yahoo) to collect the mail. Then you need to
read the mail using the internet to reach the public
server, but it leaves everything else pretty 'clean.'

If AOL and ClayArt are having mutual indigestion,
creating a new screen name won't cure the problem.
The world of the internet inside of AOL is pretty
cleaned up -- not as raunchy, dangerous, or weird as
it is for others. And much less spam. The price you
pay for it is the kind of occasional problem you're
experiencing now.

I do recommend DSL, though. the extra speed
eliminates many of the time-outs and errors and other
failures common to folks still on dial-up.

Best wishes -- Steve Slatin
