Some people put their noses in other peoples business. I prefer to put my
business in other peoples noses.
Mel is right about shows as a calculated business decision. I only get so
many racers in a given year. Fewer great pots than great opportunities. I
can save them for a show in Atlanta or Belgium or I can sell them to my own
customers that shop at the farm gate.
If you build a better mousetrap the world will beat a path to your door may
work for some exceptional potters. I have found that i have to turn over
rocks, wave flags and sometimes think I should stand naked in the middle of
the road to get cars to stop. We don't wait for customers to come to us. We
work very hard at being visible in Beamsville, Sag Harbour, NY, and
Minnetonka, Minnesota.
Being in a prestige show costs the potter money. He/she rarely breaks even.
You must weigh out the benefits to your career and ego. I am happy that our
work is known by many of you thousands of miles outside the 50 mile radius
of my farm gate. That has been great for my career. We work very hard at
putting our business in your noses.
Cheers,
Tony

Not so sure about that last idea Tony, we're not worth as much naked as we used to be!

BTW, helped Timothy with a wood firing yesterday. We'll see how things turned out this weekend.
