Hi,
I'm suggesting a switch to Godaddy from Network Solutions for an
organization I'm involved with. I know a bunch of people(including
myself) who are happy with Godaddy's cheap registration fees.
Has anyone had anything disastrous happen using Godaddy for Domain
registration? How about web hosting?

I've registered a few web domains with them and have friends who have=20
registered with them for years without any problems.

Hi Jennifer,
I'm a (part-time) computer guy. I've used GoDaddy for my own domains
for a few years. So have several friends. So have several clients.
I've never heard of any problems with GoDaddy DNS services. I've found
their customer service is OK too. GoDaddy's web tools for managing
domain names are much like Network Solutions. I'm glad GoDaddy is out
there keeping Network Solutions honest.
The only quirk about GoDaddy is that unless you add "Privacy" for your
domain, you will almost certainly get some spam and/or junk mail.
GoDaddy evidently *sells* the domain info. Domain info is, after all,
publicly available. My understanding is that Network Solutions didn't
used to sell domain info, though by now, maybe they do. Either way,
this is a small matter and helps explain why GoDaddy prices are so low.
For example, I registered a domain name for my daughter at GoDaddy. She
often gets (USPS) mail addresses to the "business contact" for the
domain. That never happened with any of the domains I registered at
Network Solutions. We probably get spam too, but our gateway mail
server removes all that, so we never see it.
Nothing is perfect, but I like GoDaddy. I use GoDaddy. I recommend
GoDaddy with confidence.

For domain registration, I can tell no difference between Network Solutions
(now Verisign) for $35 a year and Godaddy for $7.95 a year. No
problems with either.
For over 7 years I have been using Net Firms for web hosting. It is
completely free and reliable. The drawbacks are limited data transfer
per day, and banner ads.
For a small website, the limited number of hits per day is not a problem.
The only time mine cut out was the day I put photos of the space shuttle
Columbia pieces in my yard on my website and then posted the link
to Clayart. For a few buck a month, you can upgrade to allow for
more hits and data transfer.
The banner ads are not too bad because they are content specific, which
means I have ads for the likes of Bailey Pottery Supply and Clay Times
magazine on my webpage.

I have used GoDaddy.com for web hosting and email (domain hosting) for
several years now. I have had very little trouble with them and would
definitely recommend. :)

Just what I needed. Thank you all! I will do some research on the spam
issue and then proceed. What a great group!

Network Solutions is difficult to work with. I was switched
over to them from another company without my permission (some kind of
organizational change) and at that time, I was being double bill (from
the old service for services that became free on Verisign.) It was
difficult to get VeriSign to let go of my account. Part of the problem
was that I was an international account.
I switched to Godaddy and with them you can do everything on
the web. I have 3 domains with them. Their email forwarding is
really handy. But be warned, they will try to get you to buy "extras"
when you go through the billing process.
