well, now one of the brightest buttons on
our shirt, steve slatin has a problem.
man, oh man.

this is good.
ok, here it is:

steve, train the neighbor kid, your wife or partner, or perhaps
your mom....have them look in the kiln for you.
make a drawing of what the cone should look like...what degree
of angle.
they will tell you if things are alright.

i personally use our neighbor girl...she is seven.
`rose, look in the kiln for mel/use this green glass....what is the cone
doing?`
`well mel, i would call that a really hot cone 11...i think it is done.`
see.
works like a charm.
you just need a bit of help.

tony clennell has his old neighbor come over and
tell him when the kiln is done.

by the way.
if you want people to leave your gas kiln alone, just
add a sign....50,000 volts/danger
works like a charm.
of course i have said in the past.

Mel --

OK, my wife is by my side now, and I'm telling her
"Dear, Mel Jacobson says you should stay up with me
all night when I'm doing glaze firing. He doesn't
know you, but he wants you to look in the peephole and
see when the pyrometric cone is dropping."

her reaction was "Are you talking about me? I'm
sorry, I didn't get the joke."

I guess I'll just have to rely on my own devices.

Thanks for the laugh -- you're right, it's the obvious
answer and I didn't even think of it -- and you really
got me on that one.

Regards -- Steve Slatin

Steve Slatin --

Frail my heart apart and play me little Shady Grove
Ring the bells of Rhymney till they ring inside my head forever
