moderating clayart (technology rant)

updated tue 12 jul 05

It is my opinion that the main problem with Clayart is the technology that
runs it. There are some much better technologies out there when it comes to
running a forum such as this. These technologies would drastically change
Clayart but it would be for the better. I run a forum on Claystation.com
called the Ceramic Arts Technical Forum. A forum of technical discussions
dedicated to the field of Ceramic Arts. It is run by an application called
phpbb2. See it at http://www.claystation.com/technical/forum/index.php

Several Key User Benefits
- Posting a message and then receiving an email notification when some
responds to your post.
- No overwhelming list of emails to receive everyday. Just go to the forum
and click on =93view posts since last visit.=94
- =93View all unanswered post=94 with one click.
- Very user friendly and easily searchable.
- More personable because you can add emoticons (face) and avatars (picture
that represents you) with each post.
- Attachments and images can be included in your post. Don=92t worry about
viruses because you don=92t receive any email.

Several Key Moderator Benefits
- Several people can moderate the group because the forum is spilt into
topics, and you can have different moderators for each topic.
- Junk mail can be easily filtered out by banning IP=92s and users.
- Less duplicate questions because the user is more likely to do a search fi=
rst.
- Posts are automatically organized and also easily customized.

Now I would suspect many people would miss getting their daily emails but I
am a member of several forums (mostly about website development and scripts)=

run by phpbb2 or other applications like it and I=92d have to say the
experience is very pleasant and user friendly and as the moderator, the
technology does most the work for you.

As far as having people at each other throats well I still see that in these=

types of forums. No way really around that, although we do have an advantage=

that most of us work with clay all day. We really have no reason to be upset=

or irritated by one another because we get to do what we love everyday. Most=

people don=92t!

Marek,

I'm plenty cool. I merely put forth some suggestions
based on other suggestions and thoughts.

Last time I checked we could freely express ideas
(when or if they get posted) and discover after
discussion if they are good ideas, practical or not.
I am always interested in improving, not fixing, so
your adage does not apply here.

happy potting to you as well.

Andy,

I think, assuming there is interest, this may be a very good idea. I could see Ron as moderating glazes and or clay body, Vince, studio applications, Lee, Japanese related, or something like that. I think spreading out the moderating duties might be a good thing for everyone, split up the work, not so much one person doing everything and then being held accountable for everything. I think it would also squelch any true or perceived censorship. I think it would take heat off of Mel and get others involved.

Dear Tony Ferguson,

the division of labours for the Clayart List would make it go tits up as far
as I am concerned.
I do not know Mel, I can feel some of his politics coming through when he
writes, and whether I agree with him or not is imaterial, but he runs the
list as his property (he has said that many times - this is my list) and
that is why it works. If it was run democratically it would not work. It
works because it is essentially a one man show.
The old adage of why fix when it ain't broke springs to mind. Just keep
reading and writing to the list, use the delete button as and when, and keep
cool. No one person is ever going to be correct always - not ewven me.
