Elizabeth,
I asked not because I doubt that North Carolina has a rich pottery
tradition and that the area is home to many potters and pottery lovers
(I do not doubt this. There was a few weeks each semester that were
dedicated to the pottery tradition in that area at San Jose State in
the time I was there.).
I asked because you have posted numerous times that North Carolina has
the highest concentrations of potters (I can 't remember if you said
anywhere or just the US).
I wanted to know if this was true because if it is it is truly
remarkable based on my travels to Japan and China (There are many, many
potters in Turkey, but they are spread out over a vast area.). I have
seen a number of 300 (Website) and 900 (Mashiko potters association
number) kilns in Mashiko, according to various sources, alone.
Fun fact: Japan is the land area of California. One could make the
argument that Japan is equivalent to one US state. ;-)
Another Fun fact: Japan while having the land area of California, it
also has less than half the number of lawyers that California does.
Hmmmmmm.............;-)
It seems in Jingdezhen that there is a pottery behinds every door. I
think the number o people involved in the pottery industry was 500,000
to 600,000 in Jingdezhen. Granted most are not potters, but the number
is staggering and I do not doubt it. Po how about tellings us what you
know of the numbers of potteries in Jingdezhen?
BTW, I only asked about the state because you said NC, as I recall, so
don't get upset with Lee, because he followed the link for Seagrove to
come up with a number that they have on the web.
Rick in Washington State where I have no idea how many lawyers we
have.............

I have no idea what number you were looking for.
I think due to population density, China has
more of every occupation.
I think we have more potters per citizen of any state.
But I certainly cannot prove it, because, like I said,
the census bureau charges for this information. It
is in the marketing stuff and is gleaned from stats
on reported occupation.
Anyone onlist with a fee already paid for marketing
with census info could give us a number.
But I ain't got that kinda cash to bicker with.
Regarding number of kilns, I happen to have 5 and
am building a 6th. And I know several friends with
at least 5, so the Mashiko number of kilns may be
accurate. I would hate the job of counting the kilns
in NC, both inactive and active. Please note the
distinction of number of kilns v/s number of potters.
Potters to kiln numbers would need to be evaluated
fairly cautiously in any geographic location.
I will try to be more precise in the minutia in the
future, but numeric details are really not my ilk.
