Thanks for bringing this thread back. He might be using the disk to
spread the pressure and reduce friction (the clay is very soft). But
I'm sure that he's using it also as a guage to know how to cut the
foot. The disk represents the inside of the foot.

I was hoping that Lee might confirm this since I think he knows him
having also been a deshi of Shimaoka.

And Pat, if you were at Aberystwyth, how did I miss you!
