Hello folks,

I have come to the conclusion that I am going to
explore barrel firing. Thus, I want to find an oil
drum; I am not really interested in trash cans, in
case you ask :)

I believe they come around 50 gallon sizes. Any of you
know where I could get one, a cleanable one? I am in
the Chicago area, but needs have no boundaries :)

TIA,

Fabienne McMillan

I am kazillions of miles away, but we can get great, clean drums from a
recycling business.... the scrap metal businesses also have them, but
sometimes they are really dirty, rusty etc...

Hi abienne,

The alleys and byeways of almost any Industrial or older seedy Commercial
areas ought to have them free for the taking..

Night time works good too...

Some have the ring-lock lids...which would be best for your intentions...

Others have permenent lids with screw-out bungs, where you'd have to cut the
lid out.

Recyclers should have them...

Lots of businesses get things that come in them, or use them...

Places where the Rail Road Tracks run through Manufacturing zones...

Storage Yards for contractors of various kinds...

Scrappers and Breakers...

Places that deal with Oils, Kerosene, Solvents... often have them laying
around...

Places that have them will usually give you one or sell you one very
reasonable or will trade you one for a 12 pack of Dr. Pepper...

And if not, just mosey on to the next place...that will...

I have a more narrow barrel than a 55 gallon. I like it. I have
drilled 1" holes into the sides on three levels.
Try a petroleum plant. We have them here in Montana. Dry cleaners use
to use 55 gallon drums, also.
Good luck.

going to try some saggar firings after raku this week.

Hello Fabienne,

You may also try food processing plants that receive bulk ingredients in
55gal drums (our local dairy does).

Or surplus dealers.

Auto paint suppliers or auto body shops may have empty lacquer thinner
drums, they are very clean. Printing shops use a lot of cleaning fluid that
come in 50 gal. drums to clean their presses, also very clean. I pick up
drums from both places.

Hay Poor,
I first barrel fired in Joe Funk's 1/2 a 55 gallon burning barrel out
behind the Art compound at the Pot Shop in Venice, California. If you live
in Chicago finding a barrel should be easy. Go to the homeless part of town
with a couple bottles of wine, find somebody standing around a barrel, and
they'll have one for you in 9 minutes.
Stay in there!

Thanks for the feedback. I finally opted for Northern
Container which is a distributor by Midway Airport
(nice folks); not in my general area, but what is in
around here? I'm picking it up tomorrow. Woohoo!
Still gathering the other "ingredients" for the
escapade and have yet to find a kiln to bisque the
pieces, mine being packed, the college's under
construction... Might have to wait until January...
itching...

Cheers,

Fabienne McMillan
