Hello,

it's been my experience that licorice (aka rr black) likes a near full
cone 6, especially if it's thick. i'm wondering if you know how to
override your kiln sitter
and just use cones to determine when to shut down. i don't even put a
small cone in my glaze firings.

either way, when your sitter drops, just lift it back up and push in
your power button then gently lower the lever. when your cones say
you've reached temp,
just lift the latch up again and let it drop to trip the switch. no
electricians tape needed, just be sure to monitor carefully as your
reaching temp.
also, for me, licorice works well without a soak or slow cool. i
fire it both ways
depending on the other glazes in the load but my experience is that a
slow cool down creates a 'tea dust' effect with this glaze.

my schedule for cool down is to hit temp, turn off the kiln (leaving
vent on) for 45 minutes or so, then all switches back on medium (reset
the sitter as mentioned above), for 30 minute
or so then everything off, including vent and cover vent holes in lid.
hope this helps.
