daddy binns and ann arbor fair

Hey -- I have been corresponding for 20 years with an astrophysicist
(now retired) from the Ohio State University (my alma mater) -- and his
dad was a student of Daddy Binns in the 20's. He just emailed me a photo
out of his dad's photo album: I posted it at
http://www.primalmommy.com/photoalbum.html

Yesterday, a wheel student called to cancel, and I looked at my schedule
for the day and then decided to close my eyes and jump, instead -- I
loaded the kids in the car, drove to Ann Arbor, Michigan, and got on a
shuttle bus to the enormous, wonderful street fair.

We had a blast. I moved at a different pace than I would have without
kids, but that just meant more time sitting in the grass listening to
music, wading inthe fountain, and lots of stops for ice cream or french
fries.

They were really good sports, and we spent the whole day -- came home
sun burned and exhausted. I met Charity Davis-Woodward, who had just
returned from giving her woodfiring workshop at Appalachian Center for
Craft. Her work is just lovely! Steven Hill's lucious pots were there,
and Gail Dapogny's (though I missed seeing Gail by just a few minutes!)
The Ann Arbor potter's guild really has some serious potters.

I printed out all the posts I could find -- plus a few from the archives
-- about kiln fillers, and stuff kids can make. My kids really want to
make some money. I got my oldest helping me yesterday and we cranked out
40 long, thin olive dishes with the extruder and some roulettes.

Lili once posted a wonderful list of little "sellables" and I haven't
been able to find it inthe archives... did anyone save it?

I will be happy to join into the thank-you festival we've been hosting
on clayart ever since somebody got jumped for being unappreciative ;0) I
was told early on that anything offered on-list is for public perusala
nd doesn't need an individual acknowledgement -- but advice given off
list deserves a thank you note. I hope I have kept up with my end on
that. There have been times when I wake up to 20 off-list clayarter
posts (along with homeschoolers and mail form the other lists I
moderate) -- and mean to come back to some of them later -- but the
river keeps a-flowin'...

Go see Daddy Binns. Great old sepia photo.

Yours
Kelly

A couple/few years ago there was an exhibit of Binn's work at the Renwick
Gallery in Washington, DC. I gathered up a group of my students and we made
a day of visiting museums/galleries.

I did my research, have a copy of Binn's "The Potter's Craft", so I could
teach/answer questions during our visit to his pottery. While there,
describing the process to my students, somebody tapped my shoulder and
introduced himself/herself (been some time, can't remember if a man or
women) as Binn's grandchild. The individual remembers seeing pots around the
house a told my students a few stories about Binns.

Kelly -

If you want to know more, find a copy of "Charles
Fergus Binns - The Father of American Studio Ceramics"
by Margaret Carney.
ISBN I-55595-145-7. It's a great story and his legacy
of science + art is still part of NY State College of
Ceramics at Alfred University.

Ceramics Monthy reprinted some of his writing in their
"Comments" column in Jan. & Oct. 1980. See also
American Ceramics Vol 1 #3 Summer 1982 "The Searching
Flame" by Susan Strong.

If your astro physicist pen pal is so inclined, ask
him to PLEASE send a copy of the photo (and any other
relevant ones) plus any details to:

OR e-mail to gulacsy@alfred.edu

Ann Arbor is a great town. If you're ever there sans
children, check out Red Hawk restaurant. Great place
for food and beer.
