horse hair raku/what else?

it seems to me that anything that burns and makes
a carbon mark will work.

there is far too much talk about specific hair.
like you have to go to a stable at night...and cut
off horses tails...like it is the only thing that works.

use your imagination.
squirrel road kill tails.
golden retriever
gobs of thread..string..plant life.
a dead bird...pluck the feathers.

how many have dropped an ice cube in the
bottom of a hot raku....???? spray cold water
from a squirt bottle. wd40?

it is an endless string of experiments.

people get caught up in the recipe...then they
think if they do not follow the recipe to the T they
will not get it to work.

local reduction is just that. local reduction.
what you use to make the carbon mark is not as
important as getting a good carbon mark. who cares
what kind of horse?
`can i use palomino horse hair, or does it have to be quarter horse????`

i know it might be just `me`...but if someone talks about horse hair,
i immediately think `what other hair will work, and how many substitutes
are there?, good god, this is endless. i am going to a barber shop
and get a pail of scrap hair....`

again, what i am asking folks to do...is think about what is happening.
the technical process.
don't think of hair.

I've tried just about everything. Weeds, plants, leaves, etc don't
leave much of a mark. The substance being burned that leaves the best
marks needs to contain the protein Keratin. Hair, finger nails,
and insect exoskeletons have it.

Why horse hair instead of human hair, or some other hair? Horse hair
is thicker, longer, and readily available. You need the length to
control application, and the width to give a visible mark. Human hair
is simply too thin (in my experience) to leave much of a mark. That's
the reason why everyone talks about horsehair- and tail hair at that
(not mane hair).

I do wonder why everyone doing horsehair seems to want to do it on
white pots, or at best fume ferric oxide onto the pot. There are
*lots* of ways to color the outside of the pot before you apply the
hair. You can make any color you might want. I like red and blue
horsehair pots myself.

Dear Mel and All; Just in case you were wondering... CARIBOU hair will not work, as it is hollow and it pops off like popcorn before making any real mark. I suspect polar bear hair would do the same but as I am not an Alaskan Native I didn't get a chance to try that out while living in Alaska. My girlfriend made some pots with human hair, but the lines were VERY thin and light. Plus I thought it was kind of creepy, since they were from her deceased father. Most dog hair from what I have heard is too short to do much either. Anyway, my two "SENSE".
