I've been emulating Mel since he gifted me with a mug last October.
I've given away many mugs since then to good customers. They are thinking of me when they use it.

And I love my Mel Mug. My cocoa tastes better now. Thanks, Mel. :)

i give most of them away....pay cash...one hundred dollar bill.
you get a mug.
mugs are about promotion and care of customers.
they come back. they buy your average.

i say.
what are your pots worth?

what is a mug...just a pot.

make your life about average. every pot you make
hits that average.

so, some are 60 bucks
some are 20 bucks.
who cares?
maybe some are 1,000 bucks.

try and sell and get rid of what you make.

it is the pots that sit around unsold that are the problem.
what can you do with that wasted time?

make a number in your head.
every time you make a pot...that is the number.

think...40 bucks.
every time you make a pot.
it is the average....not what you get for this or that.

add up all the pots you make in one year.
add up all the money you made in one year.
take out expenses.
average.
that is what you get for your pots.
(some of you will pee your pants....my god, its 57 cents.

it takes longer to make a mug than a fifty dollar bowl.

This was a timely thread since I decided
to conquer my dislike of making mugs this year.
I started my quest last week slogging through
slow motion novice pains and as I have a big show this
week I am subject to interruption. I made 12 but only
8 made it to bisque. I still dislike the handles
but know that it will take many dozens
before I find what handle works for me.
This is not fun but the clay is daring
me.... No ....it's Double Dog Daring me!!!!
Last year's challenge was plates this year .... mugs.
I seem to be doing this bass ackwards as I have been
making teapots since my first year in clay. I cannot figure
what's with this mug resistance?
Anyway.... after reading the postings on mugs I have decided
that my goal is not to make masses of mugs to sell or give away
but to become comfortable and enjoy making them.
I make more $ in so much less time with my soap dishes.
My large ones go for $14 - $18 small ones $3.
They continue to rescue me at shows.
I give them away as Mel does his mugs. I give them to those in need
of a kind act, to children who make their parents come into my booth,
to people who enjoy my work and are return customers. Tourists
love them because they travel easily and well.
