cone 6 ox quick glaze question

updated wed 27 jul 05

This may be a silly question, but...

I have some miniature items I would like to have completely glazed (color).
I fire to cone 6.

I know with low fire glazes those stilts with wires are often used, and you
can dip something in clear glaze and stilt it, and then pop the stilt off
after the firing.

Anything like that with high fire?

I know almost nothing about underglazes - is that a possibility?

Ideas appreciated -

Thanks!

Hello, =20
I fire things for students quite often on stilts we order from Laguna
(the ones with the ceramic core w/wire coming up not the all wire
ones)...I think they are made for low fire but we take them to cone 5.
One problem is when the pots are too heavy the wire can't take it but
they survive the heat when they have lighter pieces on them so with
miniatures you should have no problem. The only other problem we have is
obviously low fire glazes usually don't run like higher firing glazes so
sometimes we loose stilts because the glaze runs and sticks to the
ceramic part of the stilt and the stilt and the piece are usually ruined
so if your glaze isn't too runny you should have no problem to at least
cone 5. Hope this help.=20

Hi Andie;

Yes, you can stilt your small items at cone 6. I have some stilts that I've
had for years. Before using, I file the little points clean and dab some
kiln wash on. Be prepared to have 3 tiny bumps in your fired glaze that you
need to grind off.

I'm not sure what your question is about underglazes. They are available for
cone 6, if that's what you mean.

Stilts will work at stoneware temperatures. One
reason they're not used often is that the prongs
get softer at stoneware temps, and if the object
weighs much, the prongs will bend over and leave
the object glazed to the clay part of the stilt.
For tiny things such as you described, though,
stilts should work OK.

After firing, grind off the mark. If it's a glossy
glaze, a dab of clear nail polish will 'erase' the
blemish.

If the standard stilts haven't the proper spacing
for your miniatures, make your own with bits of
kanthal wire embedded in clay.
