David Hendley is swimming and jumping off cliffs when I need a guy to
properly address why reality and theory is different. If we tell Phil he can
line up 500 cups a week will he jump in and become a potter???? I doubt it!
If it were that easy why isn't everyone making a living at pottery. And I
get pissed with those that think unlike the potters of yester year, potters
today get up in the morning make home made granola, read a book, walk in the
woods for a couple of hours for inspiration, smoke a joint, have a sleep,
sit and watch their bowls dry for the afternoon and then go make suppper.
Most potters I know are very dedicated and have great work ethics.
I have thought Snow Job 101 before. Every FEb I get this order for 30
cassoles $100 each- Simple 12 lb bowl, flat bottom, no trimming, small
pulled lip. Should be able and could throw all 30 in a day. Far too many
reasons to explain why I don't. Somehow we seem to take close to a month-
$3000 less expenses(that's OK in Feb). Jim in Edmonton 750 mugs /2 months
$7500. About the same $$$ as me.
Friend of mine gets an order for 300 vases $25,000. Thinks Snow Job 101.
Bang these off and have 11 months to do what she wants. Takes her the better
part of 5 months. $5000 a month is a living! She asks me if I want the order
next year? I answer "no!" Remember if you pick something up, you have to put
something down. I would let my showroom and my career down.
Time for Phil to watch the Issac Button film. Lots of hard work, lots and
lots of pots- a working mans wage just like the rest of us.
Cheers,
Tony

Nevada School of Economics has little to do with pots, or pot making. It's
all about getting something for nothing. The whole economy is driven by it.
Visitors wonder why I never gamble. I tell them that if the house wasn't
winning it wouldn't be such a nice house. They don't build all of those
nice extravagant hotels from charity donations. Donations- yes, charity -
no.
I've lived here most of my life, it's a cultural desert.

Without getting into a "Oh yeah, well we made more than you did"
match, in the months we made the 750 mugs there was a whole lot more than
mugs went out the door. We do a whole line and supply several retailers so
in those two months we invoiced almost twice that amount. May, June, and
July for the tourist season in the Rockies we got "mugged". We just don't
want everyone thinking that's all we did or do....( and anyone running a
business knows "invoiced" is not the bottom line...)
