strange problem with brent wheel

Dear Clayarters,

May I call upon your expertise about something I noticed today when
trimming, using my Brent wheel. I hear a slight noise as if the wheel head
was brushing against a piece of clay or whatever. So I reached under and
cleared the accumulated debris but found nothing. However, thinking it
might be something with the mechanics under the wheel head found a bunch of
hair tightly wound around the post and impossible to unravel.

My question is, will this harm the operation of my wheel? I don't see me
able to take the wheel head apart unless it is easy and not heavy, but any
suggestions would be welcome. Now where did all that hair come from? There
were a few dark hairs but mine is white and I was able to pull some hair
that was light colored. Did the spinning wheel attract any loose hair from
my clothes? It was very awkward to get a good finger grip on some of the
protruding hairs to pull them off. They broke away, in other words.

Back in production mode to make pots for the annual Charlevoix Art Fair. I
found a photo of my table (no booths in those days) and work back in the
early 1960's. My husband and daughter are shown in the background playing
shuffleboard. In those days, no crowds of buyers. If you look in the
Archives of the Charlevoix Waterfront Art Fair
http://charlevoixwaterfrontartfair.org/Archives.htm you will see photos of
what the fair looked like in 1967 and at the present time. My kids unpack,
set up the tent and sell my work for me as I spend my time talking to old
customers and friends whom I haven't seen in years since I closed my
Charlevoix shop. The children of customers who came to my shop years ago
come to my booth, married with children of their own reminding me of how
they enjoyed going through my shard pile. The present owners of our old
place have gone through my shard pile and their Resident Artist is making a
very large mosaic display as a memory piece in honor of our pioneering.
When that is finished, maybe I can put it up on the Flickr site or my own
Blog page.

Thank you,

Regards,

Bonnie,
For what this is worth, I have found, in the past, a similar situation
with my vacuum cleaner: fine hair tightly wound around spindles. Now,
mind you, I have 3 dogs so hair is expected. But, regardless of
origin, the only way I was able to remove it was to take something very
sharp like a razor blade and cut through it. It definitely was
hindering the working of the vacuum cleaner. Good luck.

Hi Bonnie,

A thought about the hair, could you just 'brush' it lightly with a
propane torch? Hair burns easily...

Thanks, Gail. I have done that to a vacuum cleaner and really never thought
of a razor blade. Now, if I can get my hand to manipulate a razor blade in
those tight quarters, I will give it a try. It feels like a very narrow
band of hair and when I first touched it, it felt like a thin strip of
plastic. I know it is hair at this point and will give your idea a try.

Paul, that is also a great idea that crossed my mind. Now that you have
brought that up, thinking just a kitchen match might do the job. I am glad
the wheel head is made of metal.
