The Natural History museum has some great pre-columbian pots. The Art
Museum also has some great Oriental pots in their
collection..although it has been a few years since I visited there.

There are a couple of interesting ceramics galleries
in Cherry Creek, and the Denver Art Museum is
full of good stuff, including a sizeable collection of
Native American works, including pots.

Hi all, I have been lurking for a while, but now I need some help.
I have plane reservations to Denver for Aug. 12 to Aug 20. I will be in
Ouray for Daryl Baird's workshop until Aug. 16 then returning to Denver.
Does anyone have any suggestions for things to do, places to stay, see, or
experience in or around Denver or points in between for a 60+ single gal for
the rest of the week?
I will have a rental car. Have never been to Denver except to fly through.
Thanks,
Noel Gilliam

Some things in the Denver area
Santa Fe Arts District, there are quite a few galleries along Santa Fe Dr.
between 7th and 9th streets, Artists on Santa Fe is one of the galleries.
Show of Hands in Cherry Creek.
Boulder Arts and Crafts Coop in Boulder.
Maynard Tishler just had a show on the Denver University Campus, not sure if
it's over yet, but really worth checking out and I can't remember off hand
the name of the gallery it's in but might be on their website.
And of course, feel free to stop by the Arvada Ceramic Arts Guild in Arvada,
I'm usually there all the time.

Stop at the Foodhills Art Center in Golden, Colorado, right across from =
the Coors Brewery, they always have a great show there.
Right now they have a show "Rolling Thunder, Art from the Plains" ...
http://www.foothillsartcenter.org/current_exhibition.html
I was a volunteer there when we lived there in the late 80's - 90's.
Just for kicks, downtown Larimer Square or Cherry Creek, nice galleries =
there, high class shopping.

Castle Marne is a great B&B in Denver. It is a luxurious, restored 1880's
mansion that looks like a castle. It is located in a historic district
near the Denver Botanical Gardens, which are not pottery related, but
worth visiting. My husband and I stayed there a few years ago after a week
of hiking in the Rockies, and it was a superb chnage of pace. Here is a
link to their website:

p.s. visit TATTERED COVER bookstore in Cherry Creek, third largest (old =
fashioned) bookstore in the country not counting chain stores of course. =
Eat at the restaurant on top or visit Boulder and eat at the Flagstaff, =
now there is fine dining, or at the Fort in Morrison, now there is a =
place to see.

Hi Noel,
I was born/raised in Colorado, mostly in Boulder. Ouray has always been =
one
of my favorite places of all. It is particularly nice when the Aspens =
are
turning.
If you go to the Museum of Natural History in Denver do not miss the
dinosaur exhibit. Their minerals and gems collection is also =
outstanding. =20
Boulder is around 30 miles NW of Denver. It has been a few years since =
I've
been back, though, so hopefully these recommendations are not outdated.
CU has a strong ceramics department and their gallery always has =
interesting
work. The Alfred Packer (an infamous Colorado cannibal) grill is good =
eats
on campus.
In general, there are a number of quality galleries in a relatively =
small
area on Pearl Street (foot traffic only) which offer ceramics. Although
some of us Colorado natives cherish the obligatory resentments against
progress and wax sentimental about Pearl street when it was just a =
street...
between you and me Pearl street is a *really* nice place to spend an
afternoon.
BOULDER ARTS AND CRAFTS COOPERATIVE 1421 Pearl St.--one of the oldest =
art
coops in the United States. Always had interesting ceramics.
BUSCH GALLERY - 1936 14TH ST, Boulder
MACLAREN/MARKOWITZ GALLERY - 1011 PEARL ST, Boulder
MUD-LUSCIOUS STUDIO - 2961 N. Broadway, Boulder (Used to host lots of =
local
potters, sculptors, etc.--one of several cooperatives in Boulder.)
Have a great trip!
Steve
