Thanks to all who gave suggestions, especially Lee Love. I went to Best =
Buy,
Costco and Circuit City to track some of the suggestions and gain a =
better
knowledge. To do an adequate job, matching need with budget I am leaning
towards Nikon Coolpix 5900. Is there anyone out there with experience =
using
this camera? Would like to here from you.

Thanks again,

We have the Nikon Coolpix 4500. When we researched our purchase the =
only
criticism we heard of the Nikon was the challenge of navigating the =
menus.
And that is my criticism. It seems that the possibilities are =
endless--but
so are the menus and getting from one to another frequently has required
pulling out the manual again for the manyith time as the photo op moment
slips by. Gay Judson in San Antonio TX

I have a Nikon Coolpix 990, which is four years old. I usually use a
Novatron external flash with that camera. (The Novatron runs on 120 volts.
It is a small box that flash units plug into. The Novatron connects to the
camera through a cable.)

The Coolpix 990 has problems handling external flash. If you tilt the camera
the wrong way, the flash won't fire. Also, exposure is difficult to control.

I recently bought a Canon Rebel 8 megapixel camera. At first it wouldn't
fire the Novatron. Then the camera store recommended a different brand of
"hot shoe" adapter for the camera, and it now fires the Novatron.

So if you are buying a digital camera and intend to fire external flash,
first test the camera in the store.

Sincerely,

The menus in the Coolpix 990 are so complex that I have often had to refer
to the manual. But I like the quality of images from the 990. (Paragon's
latest ads in Clay Times and Ceramics Monthly were shot with the 990.)

Hi,
I just finished a post regarding the complexities of the Coolpix 5900
which you may wish to refer to. Although mentioned, I did not go into
detail regarding the fantastic results with the macro mode so here it is:
I shot a close up of a dime which filled the frame of the screen. The
image was sharp to the extent I could see the many scratches on the
surface of the dime. If you'd like I can e-mail you some images.
