Just got back from the members preview of the de Young store and de Young=
cafe at the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park.
(The museum itself and all it's galleries doesn't open until Oct 15 but t=
he store and cafe will be open Tues-Sat 10-5 and you can visit them free =
without being a member.)
The main reason for my going was to see the new Andy Goldsworthy installa=
tion at the entrance of the museum. It was originally called "Faultline"=
but the visitors guide calls it "Drawn Stone". It a courtyard of slate =
stone from England that Andy has made a broken line thru the whole courty=
ard in an uneven pattern. The line even goes thru large stones that you =
can sit on in the courtyard
A lot of people this morning didn't get the concept that Andy put the lon=
g crack thru the courtyard as a statement that we live in earthquake coun=
try. Several people commented that the courtyard was broken already. It=
is a "must see" new Andy Goldsworthy. He will be here in SF for the ope=
ning Oct 15th and will have a show at Haines Gallery, 49 Geary St, SF in =
Oct
Went into the museum store where they have many beautiful craft pieces fo=
r sale in glass, wood, metal and pottery. ACGA's potter, Cuong Ta has h=
is beautiful pottery for sale there. The museum store is 2 levels. The =
bottom level is mostly books.
The cafe has sandwiches, salad, cookies etc and drinks. You can eat insi=
de or outside.
Starting Wed anyone can visit the store and cafe. It is free, you don't =
have to be a member. You can see the Andy Goldsworthy installation anyti=
me as it is outside the building and definitely worth visit.
