Hello John,
Intriguing suggestion, however I think your comments =91 ... there are no
standards=92 and =91Other professions have certification processes=92 are a
little absolute as there are both professional qualifications and
organizations for ceramics, although these are generally for industry and
academia rather than craft potters. I cant help but think closer liaison
between all might be interesting
Regards
Andy

Good points Andy. I did overstate a bit. For others who have commented,=20=
please note I didn't mean to suggest or say that crazed functional=20
pottery should not be sold. My point is that instructors should have=20
the technical knowledge to know what causes pinging and to know at=20
least a general approach to solving it if they or their students=20
want/need to solve it. I was probably set off by the original post=20
where the studio owner was quoted as saying (and I am paraphrasing--I=20
don't remember the exact quote) he/she didn't know what caused it but=20
it always happens. It is that kind of ignorance and obvious lack of=20
craftsmanship skills that I am upset by in someone trying to teach=20
others. Sure we all go through a stage where we don't know what causes=20=
it, but hopefully we learn things like that before we start to teach=20
others. If someone who understands the phenomena decides to ignore it=20
for aesthetic reason that is a different issue. I'm OK with that for=20
crazing, but not for shivering/dunting. But teachers who don't=20
understand what causes pinging,......arghh.
