Thanks for suggesttions re Mason Stains. I've phoned the very helpful people
at Scarva Pottery Supplies in Northern Ireland and they are sending me some
Mason Stain samples to try, including the fritt and medium they recommend. I
have to say the range of colours is the widest I've seen, including Blythe
and Sneyd. The supplier I wanted to use, and who my previous employer uses
for Majolica only sell in in minimum 1Kg amounts! 1Kg of red stain alone
would cost me a fortune and probably last me most of my life as this is only
for my students to use; I'd rather get a good variety of colours in smaller
quantities. Having heard so many of you American Clayarters rave anout Mason
Stains I thought I'd give it a try.

I've always in the past just mixed stains with some of the base glaze and
that has worked ok. The satins I have been using recently are from China,
sold by CTM in Exeter, and the quality is variable to say the least, (but
they are cheap). The more frit I add the worse the blistering gets. I
suspect the SB frit and the CB Frit sold also by CTM is responsible for this
as I've had problems with clear glazes containing these fritts; blistering
again.

So, yes, much testing is about to begin. CTM stain with and without fritts,
Mason Stains likewise; different thicknesses, etc, etc. I'll let you know
how I get on.
