Hello TO all you clayarters,
You may have noticed me posting from time to time on
the listserver. I am a aspiring student, That is I
aspire to be a student. And i was just wondering if
there is some thing I am missing. You see I am
searching for a grad school. And have had poor luck in
doing so. Dispite what Google or Yahoo say I have to
believe that there are more than 26 colleges in The
United States that have Art programs (hehehehe)
Anyway, I was just wondering if there was some sort of
somthing that any of you know of where I can get an
idea about Grad arts programs in the USA or even
abroad. I'm open I'll go where ever they will accept
me :)))) I don't wanna sound like I am just griping
about the unavailablity of info on art programs via
the web but I was just mostly hoping that some one out
there had some sort of site of insite on this, because
I am just having no luck on my own and I have notice
that this has been an amazingly helpful forum,
especially for a Newbie such as myself. You guys take
time out to help us along and that is so very kind of
all of you. well I suppose I have reached my 500 words
so bye, PS Any help would be help

Thanks
--Pat

Patrick,
Try the University of New Mexico. You can't beat the weather and they have a nice program.

Do a search of Clayart archives. There has been discussion in the past about
grad school programs in clay.

If you tell us more about what you are looking for in a grad program and
what your goals are after school, perhaps we could be more helpful.

Try your local library. It's a wonderful system!

Librarians can be very helpful. Google and Yahoo are curious
substitutes for human knowledge but usually lack the ability to
interpret and guide, often throwing you in the midst of the forest. A
librarian can clear the underbrush and point you in the right
direction.

Pat,
The College Art Association publishes a book that lists all the MFA
programs in the US. Your dept. advisor should have the book. If not,
suggest they buy it.
It costs about $10 from the CAA. I bought one (as usual teachers
purchase such things out of pocket) and used it for advising when I
was teaching. Very resourceful book.
NCECA also has published two books over the past 20 years listing all
ceramics programs in higher ed. ..at least those with NCECA members
who bothered to respond. The last one was a while ago.

Sure enough Kathy!

Pat,

The Peterson guides are good places to start. You should find them in the
reference secion of your local library, perhaps pulled out and on a
seperate table. Look in the 378's.

You are going to find great books not only on which Universities offer
what programs but also books on how to write a great personal statement
and which schools have competative enrollment requirements. Find a
librarian and don't let him or her go until you have what you need. Be
sure to take change for the copy machines because those reference books
will not be circulating. You could save yourself some change and take a
pencil and paper.

Good luck, study hard, and brush your teeth,

Taylor, in Rockport TX

Google the College Art Association. They publish
a guide to MFA programs. No value judgements,
just the results of questionnaires sent to the
various schools - hundreds and hundreds of them.
The book sorts them by region, and includes both
the US and Canada. It lists what dsiciplines
there are (painting, sculpture, ceramics, photo,
printmaking, textiles, digital media, etc),
who the faculty are and where they got their own
degrees, and information about the program and
facility.

It doesn't tell you everything you'll need to
know to make a choice, but it gives you a good
starting point, with all the contact info you
need to follow up with each school. It's published
every ten years, but the current edition came out
in 2004, so it's still fairly current. Try your
local library, or if you live near a college,
they may have a copy, too. I don't think it's
on line yet, but maybe I'm wrong. Or, you can
buy your own from the CAA; I think it's about
$15.

Patrick -
Please give me some more information about what you are looking for. Do you
want to make pots? Are you looking for a big art school experience, or a
smaller more intimate department? Do you want to stick with a particular
part of the country?
