calling yourself an artist? potter?

Hi Mayssan,

I'm a potter & yes I do love fire BUT the majority of my work is also done with electricity ^6. My understanding of the word potter is someone that makes primarily functional work using a potters wheel. As far as developing my own glazes (& yes, I do make all the glazes I use) It has happened twice, both times by accident yet I love both & use then regularly. As far as throwing fast, well some days you could time me throwing something with a sundial. I'm as precise as my calipers, ruler allow me to be.

Alike? that will happen with enough seat time & a bit of concentration. I too get bored after making more than say 10 or 12 of the same thing which is why I could never do production work. My mind just can't seem to stay focused . Yes I can hear all of you who know me saying: WHAT MIND! I can't speak for anyone else but I NEED to make things (& clay is without a doubt MY medium ). That to me, makes me an artist.

I have tried quite a few different mediums my whole life, no matter what medium I worked in one thing always stayed the same. I needed to create something that pleased the eye.
Is what I make art? That's up to the person looking at my work. You might want to try to not be so concerned with method & just let the work come pouring out. You never know, you might like the results!

All the best!

Potter?

But potters love fire, I can only handle electricity. Potters can develope
their own glazes, the most I can do is mix from recipes. and Potters throw
fast , precise, and alike, I can only throw so much before I get bored.

Artist?

Artists make somthing perspnal and let it loose in the world, the more
personal the better it is( primal mommy's posts for instance).

Yes I am an artist, my medium just happens to be clay. good, or bad is not
for me to say:) Sorry Lilly I have to agree with Mel on this.

My thoughts are with all the people on the gulf coast throughout this
eventful night, especially our claybuds, I hope you all are staying safe.

Dear Mayssan
Michael Cardew said there were two types of potters: mud potters or
fire potters.
Maybe you are a mud potter if you can only do electric.
