art school merger--somewhat ot

Warning: the following is not necessarily about clay!
I had the misfortune to be stuck in Atlanta last Tuesday...nothing wrong with Atlanta or its thunderstorms...but when my no-service airline (no names but the initials are DELTA) finally cancelled my oft-delayed flight it was nearly midnight and all I got to see that evening and soon the next morning was the inside of a shuttle, a small, smoke-scented hotel room, and a very large airport.
The morning paper, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, headlined, "Art school uproar," about the upcoming merger of the oldest private art school in the southeast, the Atlanta College of Art (ACA), with the thriving Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).
The gist of this is a "fine arts" school with 330 students, 25 full-time faculty is apparently being swallowed by a growing art "tech school" that boast more than 20-times as many students, though only 12-times as many full-time faculty. Critics compare SCAD to "Wal-Mart for art." Fans point out that Hollywood special effects companies haunt the campus recruiting. Even at ACA, where enrollment has declined each of the last 3 years, 60% of the students major in tech fields rather than fine arts.
IF this particular sign of art and the time we live in is of further interest, there's also a listenable report at

Dave,

That's interesting. Just this morning I was reading an issue of Newsweek (Aug 22) that listed the "hottest" colleges in the US. SCAD was listed as the "hottest for studying art." The blurb also mentioned that "Hollywood special effects company recruiters keep SCAD on their speed dials." Looks like the school's PR people have a very consistant message which I assume means it gets results!
