I would highly recommend picking up a copy of "Alternative kilns and firing techniques" by James Watson and Paul Wandless (Lark books).
In it you will find a section on copper mattes, by Don Ellis. He uses an alchohol reduction technique that i saw demonstrated at the 2003 Kelowna clay fest (with beautiful results!) . The top of his reduction chamber is a glass pyrex bowl, this allows him to monitor the colour changes of the piece as its reducing and cooling.
As for reheating with a blowtorch....you would be lucky to get the piece hot enough to change the glaze colour without it cracking, but even if you do, this type of flashing is pretty im-permanent, and will re-oxidize fairly quickly.
Cheers
Victoria
