Greetings to all from a long-time lurker.

Coming out briefly to ask if anyone knows of a source for custom decals
that can be used on unglazed stoneware. I have a 2-color logo about 3-
inches in diameter that needs to be permanently fired on the work.

I've checked the archives, but haven't been able to find decals that will
work on unglazed surfaces. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

actually, i devised a pretty good system to get those darned decals to stay
on unglazed surfaces: wax resist. my decals go on the bottoms of my pots,
where i would be waxing anyway. a quick coat of resist, slip on decal and
press hard, a coat on top and let dry a bit before glazing. fires to ^6
without issue.

(and not to sound like a smarty pants, but you know you need to fire them
pieces on stilts if the decal is on a place on the pot where it will be
touching the kiln shelf?)

Lee,

By nature, a slide-off decal is designed for and works best on a smooth
non-porous surface like a shiney, smooth, fired glaze surface. The
decals are then fired at a lower, often lusterware temperature to
ensure a good result.
That is because the decal's colorant must make complete contact with
the surface. Bubbles or other noncontact anomalies will create voids in
the final firing. Go to a local hobby shop, buy some decals and try
applying them to your clay surface. After sliding a decal off, try
tamping gently with a wet sponge to get the best contact. In the end
however,
your best results would be to create a heavily clay based slip that
could be screen printed on decal paper. Keep in mind that decal
colorants are oil based so that they do not dissolve when you soak the
decal.

Good luck,

Dan
