Dear clayarters, I do not know when, where or how yet, but I think we =
need
to go help the guys that lost their studios to rebuild, at least a =
community
center where they can restart their careers. Saying this, I think it is =
way
too soon to react, but I do want to let you guys start thinking about =
that.
We all have extra clay, glazes, tools etc. in our studios. For some that
would be perfect to make a start. For others that are advanced or had
special recipes that is now floating somewhere in the ocean, it might =
not be
so easy, but I am sure there will be ways to help them out. My plan is =
as
follows: we need to locate these potters, follow up with them after =
their
immediate needs of housing, reunion with family etc. are met. WHEN THEY =
ARE
READY we need to address their needs for rebuilding their studios. Yes =
they
will get relief funds etc., but many of us know what it is to rebuild a
studio, so I am talking practical help. By doing that we will not only =
help
the potters, but we will help the entire community, since we all know =
what
arts and crafts means for the economy of a community. Here is my plan: =
we
need to put a small committee together that can take leadership in
organizing different aspects of rebuilding studios, specifically taking
these potters needs in consideration. Once we analyzed all that is =
needed to
rebuild and equip a studio, we need to put a plan into action. We can =
all do
something: some will just be able to donate materials, some will be able =
to
get sponsors for kilns, wheels etc. some will be able to build and =
others
will be able to throw basic pots to give them a kick start. We will not =
have
too much time to do all of this, since we are all busy in our own =
studios,
but I was thinking that we can maybe at least give these guys a =
community
studio where they can restart their lives as potters. If we identify =
their
needs and find a weekend or a few days that we can physically go help =
them,
then we will do something great to relief these people from Katrina.=20
Let's discuss this, throw the idea around and see if we can bring this =
into
practice. If you think this can work and if you have a specific way that =
you
think you can help, start thinking of how you will bring that into =
practice.
This is a huge idea and it will ask for strong leadership and good
management, so it asks for serious thinking..Also if you think you can =
help
leading some aspect of this idea, please speak up.
I JUST GOT WORD THAT THE WALTER ANDERSON STUDIOS ARE GONE. If anyone =
knows
more about it that I do, please inform us.

Hi,
are you talking about this Walter Anderson Studio
http://www.walterandersonmuseum.org/shaping.html?
When those replaced have been settled, they will probably be in various
places and find ways to contact us, then we can help. Like all of us, I'll
be happy to share.

I believe so Karin. They were real close to the coast. Now I do not know
anything but what I heard from a person from Ocean Springs that =
Shearwater
Pottery is wiped out. Also, I don't know if you know about all the =
little
art galleries in Bay ST. Louis. Not to mention all the art activities in =
New
Orleans. We might have to think about dividing this project in two. One =
for
MS and one for New Orleans. Then there is also AL. How many potters are
affected in this area?
