masking tape as resist.

Sure, but as with anything it depends on your surface its applied to and
what you are resisting.

For masking with tape on bisque ware, I prefer Chartpak tape, which
comes in various widths. It is a bit expensive when bought from a
stationary store (do we even have those anymore?), however they are
becoming endangered as a graphic artist's supply item and have been
found on sale.

Electrical tape works well as a resist to sandblasting when applied over
a glazed high fire surface.

I've found that as a roll of masking tape ages, it is more likely to not
remove in one clean pull... and I hate that! So no masking tape for me.

Hi Philip -

Masking tape is a great resist on a bisqued surface. Mask off your design,
spray or dip (or brush even) your first glaze and then let it set up but not
completely dry. Then remove the tape and glaze with your second glaze.
It's pretty effective.

Wow, Russel, what nice work! I love your treasure room. Thanks for the
visual examples of what tape resist can accomplish.

Do a search for Deborah Slahta and find her work at the Banana Factory in
Bethlehem PA. Sorry I do not know the website address. She does extensive
use of tape resist.

Yes, I have used masking tape as resist many times. I have also used
drafting tape, which is available in very narrow widths, and auto
pinstriping tape. You have to make sure that the tape is stuck down
tightly ( I run a fingernail over the entire length of tape to secure
it). You can also tear the masking tape lengthwise to get an interesting
rough edge. I once put a diamond pattern over the upper surface of a red
clay teapot by cutting tiny diamond shapes from a strip of 1/4 inch tape
and sticking the little pieces on the pot, then pouring a blue glaze over.
Much too tedious to do again!

There are some limits to the shapes that you can create with tape, and the
wider the tape, the more work it is to manipulate it into curves.

Philip,
I have students use masking tape along with both torn and cut paper =
towel to mask areas when using a spray gun to apply glazes. You can =
create really nice crisp spaces with the edge of the tape. I doubt if =
the tape would work with dipping/pouring techniques. Too much oozing. =
Just a caution: make sure you have reallllllly good venting and wear a =
mask.

Yes, have tried it. It does not stay stuck down because of the wet/damp of
what is added. As I recall, was a real mess.

Philip,

I use it all the time. works great. Try other paper tapes as well.
You can leave it on and let it burn off or remove it if you want. I
do both depending on what I'm doing.

You can use plastic tape too but you have to remove it like latex.

You can see examples of tape resist on my site at http://www.mypots.com

Have fun

On the subject of tape resist:

Check out this lovely piece done by a certain Mr. Hughes of Raleigh =
North Carolina in 1995.
He told me he had worked as an auto pinstriper at one time
