I'm thinking about going on Po Zhou's whirlwind tour of China at the end =
of May, and was wondering if any of you have gone and would you =
recommend it.=20

Are any of you going this year?

Feel free to contact me offline, if you prefer. And thanks!

Jeannean,
It was my great good fortune to go to China with
Po. I give him my highest recommendation. He is
intelligent, hard-working, detailed, responsible,
thoroughly honest, patient, good-humored and most
important of all, just a darn nice human being. By
all means go! It will be a great adventure and you'll
have a wonderful time.
Enjoy your trip,
Dave Finkelnburg in wintery Idaho, USA

Frank -

I traveled w/ Po in 2005 on his Fall tour. It was a very small group and I
would travel w/ him again in a minute. (I don't know what Ingeborg refers
to about another tour guide taking over.) He is genial and very pleasant fu=
n
company. (Tour guide is my def. of the Job from Hell.) The food was always
good and safe wherever he took us.

Safety is a major concern in China and Po always checked out any place we
went. Other tours may cut corners which might amt. to cutting food safety.

Po "knows when to quit" i.e. let people stay at hotel or just wander and
relax for a while w/ no schedule. If you decide to go, get his book in
advance and make your own notes like I wish I had. If you go, talk to the
teenagers and children. They love to practice their English. The people in
general LIKE us.

My husband and I lived in Shanghai for 3 mos. in 2005 & and are headed bac=
k
next week. I also visited Jingdezhen w/ the NCECA tour in 2008. If you
have never been to China, GO!

Yes I love Shanghai & China in general. I HIGHLY recommend PO!!

Karen,

I went to China with Po in the summer of 2007. Ours was also a small grou=
p
6 of us plus Po. He did check out all of the restaurants where we ate to
make sure they met his high standards. He also always paid at the end of
the meal with what seemed like wads of money. At one point, we had to pay
the remaining price of our tour to Po. Most of us had traveler's checks
which were an unbelievable pain to cash. After cashing them, we all paid P=
o
who now had a huge pile of money. I remember asking him where it was since
it was way too big for his money belt to hold. He smiled and patted his
arm pit where he had slung a bag under his shirt carrying the huge bundle o=
f
money.

I wish I could remember where but we met a tour guide who clearly was in
charge. Po and him divied up the money in the restaurant and at the end of
a really crappy meal, I noticed the other guy paid the bill. When I say
crappy, it was breaded chicken with the red sauce and if you can believe
French fries with catsup. I remember we asked Po what gives. He explained
that tour guides phone a restaurant (unlike Po who walked in and checked
them out) and say I am bringing X number of people. The restaurant asks
what nationality and viola we get Chinese American with french fries. We
voiced our displeasure and suggested the next time they say we are a Chines=
e
group. We met a group from NY and they were so happy with their tour guid=
e
who provided restaurants that served them American food. We on the other
hand, didn't come to China to eat the same stuff we can get at home and we
voiced our displeasure.

Po always had a case of bottled water on our bus and we took what we felt
we needed for the day and to take back to our hotel room for the night.
With the new guide, we had to insist that we stop at a store to purchase a
case of water trying to explain that's what Po did since we couldn't drink
the local water. So, things were definitely different. Po had told us whe=
n
we got to Beijing, we would have Peking Duck. We all were looking forward
to having this dish in the city it was named for. Sadly, we did not get
Peking Duck - not on the other guys budget we guessed. At the end, we had
to anty up some more money for the water and some other incidentals. Most
of the time in Beijing, Po was not around.

That's how it was in the summer of 2007. Regardless, we all had a fantasti=
c
time but our time with Po was clearly more enjoyable.

Best wishes,

Ingeborg
