spawling glaze

Hella Clayfolk!

Ok just when I thought it was all figured out! I made the swich from
high to low fire clay six months ago. My last batch of pots were
unsellable because the glaze was peeling off..It was kind of coming off
like a peeling sunburn, but more like when you have a chip in your nail
polish and you have to keep picking the polish off. the way you wish
Naked raku slip would come off but never does. The reciepe I was using
was 5o neph sy, 20 kaolin and 30 silica- something like that and it was
fine before but this one time: I had to once fire and my greenware was
pretty green( cold) when I applied the glaze ( by brushing). The ware
had slip on it and come to think about it the bits that came off of the
pot were the color of the slip. So, maybe the slip was spawling off?
Slip to thick maybe?

Just wonder if anyone had any thoughts about this. Oh and if anyone
has a Ram Fountain glazer I could borrow (forever) just let me know.

Thanks!

Hi Kristin,

Did this happen after theware was fired? If so it sounds like you have a
bad case of shivering - glaze winds up under too much compression after
cooling.

I assume it's the slip and it needs to be reformulated to raise it expnasion.

Send it to me and tell me what cone you are firing to - and include the
glaze and slip recipe.

>Dear Kirsten
There are several variables in your description that can give reason to
the shivering. That the glaze is too big for the pot, one. But having a
slip between the clay and glaze, introduces a whole new set of potential
problems of fit. The pots were also once fired. I think you need to sort
out one possible possible offender at a time. The glaze on the claybody,
the slip fitting both the clay and the glaze, the once firing ramps.

You have a lot of trials to make but it just to sort them out
systematically and able to isolate each circumstance of each trial.

Good luck,
