In the area of Lake Martin there are a good supply of
various artists and art types. I have been talking to
different business's and artists and the urge is to
get a guild going or some other method to put everyone
together in some way for shows, events etc.

I am asking the group what would you do to kick-start
this and for those who have started guilds or
colonies, what helped make it successful for you in
your area?

We have ruled out getting too thick with the political
scene from the several Cities as far as asking for
them to come aboard. It seems we all have had some
negative feelings due to politicians making it a point
to appear they individually done all the footwork and
made themselves the focus. We represent about 6
townships total.

When I was an art director several of my students were
involved with guilds in different locations. I heard
pro and con from both sides but never done a study and
was not in the position to be in meetings as I am now
with other artists wanting to start one. The idea is
emerging as an artist colony along Lake Martin but
done fashionably so that the shows or events held
would provide quality over imports and crafts of the
usual gambit. Juried shows have been mentioned. Those
who have some experience one way or the other, I would
appreciate your opinions.

We have access to 40 acres of property and we can get
access to a rather large building. We have several
artsy type business's in the area as well as several
emerging galleries.

I have just snippets of experience with various
things. However, I have heard often that the first
such an event sets the precedent and that juried shows
set a strong quality example from the start. You can
always have a general, non-juried show outside the
building, outside the gates (I've seen that from time
to time) or during a different event. it sounds like a
wonderful adventure! Marianne
