There is a well at my studio, and the water is
obnoxious. Smells of sulphur, and is full of iron
and whatever. However, it does not affect my
glazes in any way that I can discern.
Wouldn't want to drink it, though. Yechhhhh.

For the first two years after we moved into our old church in rural Ontario we had salt water in our
well. At least as salty as the ocean, maybe more so. It was difficult getting fresh drinking water for
the house (I had to haul it up in buckets from Georgian Bay, especially difficult in the winter, but I
was 30 years younger then) so I simply used the salt water to make up my glazes. I never had any
problems whatsoever with this in terms of crawling, settling or odd firing characteristics.
Eventually we got a new well drilled. The salt feature is about 50 feet down (remnant of a 400
million years ago ocean that was once here) so we stayed above that, and we've had fresh water in
the well since then. Our water is still very hard from the karst topography on the Bruce Peninsula,
but I've never noticed any problems associated with it when making up glazes.

Dannon....We had the same experience. Not the sulfur, but we test at 45 gr.
of hardness and lots of iron. Conventional wisdom said the iron would
affect glazes. But going to The store to get gallons of RO water got to be
a drag, so we tested every glaze. None were affected in the least by the
hard/high iron water.
