Thanks for all the excellent advice on and off list, folks, re run
off from the studio. I do have the plans for Vince's trap and in
fact have Vince's entire book which is encyclopedic and a great
contribution.
I think were I've come out is two separate sinks both ultimately
leading to a drywell. One clay only. The other in the glaze kitchen
will have Vince traps under the sink and then lead to the same dry well.
Here's my final question. I know the trap will trap sediment, but
if one uses barium (as I do from time to time) will the post-trap run
off water be safe to put into the dry well? Or would residual
barium leach into through to ground water eventually? I'm not doing
heavy production and don't use barium in all my glazes, but do want
to be cautious about the ground water.
Thanks again,
Nancy in MD

Interesting question Nancy.
If you don't do all _that_ much glazing, you might consider instead
having the runoff from the glaze sink go into a small retention pond
(say 4X6 feet, a few inches deep) located in a sunny area which
would allow for natural evaporation. Once every month or two, you
could then scrape the bottom of the dry pond with a hoe, collect
and dispose of it with regular waste. The pond could I suppose be
lined with a pond liner to prevent any runoff into ground water at
all. This precludes winter freeze though, unless you like chopping
ice .
With that system, you might be able to go with only one sink, and no
traps, the pond catching it all. If you're on a well, as many of us
are, anything you can do to ensure clean groundwater will help.
Just a thought,
Wayne Seidl
