Besides wonderful scenery, there is the Museum of American Ceramics
in Syracuse, NY.
Lots of New England towns, autumn foilage should be perfect about then.

The Moravian Tile Factory in Doylestown, PA north of Philly is a very
interesting place. It is a restored tile factory from the Craftsmen
Era. They are still producing tiles. Also if you research it, there
are Moravian tiles in the captial building in Harrisburg, Pa. I guess
you 'll have to decide what it is you want to see.

And visit Fonthill, nearby, the home of Henry Chapman Mercer who resurrected the Moravian Tile Works.Fonthill is a concrete castle, filled with beautiful tiles that Mercer collected from all over the world--and it's a fascinating place in itself. They're both near Doylestown, PA, a little north of Philadelphia. Hi, Ken.

Here are some great places in the northeast...

As you drive east across NY, visit Ithaca and the Finger Lakes region.
Cornell University's campus is beautiful, with two gorges, a lake and
botanical gardens (Plantations). Also, on campus, the art museum, designed
by I. M. Pei, is very good.
On the west shore of Lake Cayuga, Taughannock Falls in worth a walk.
Nearby, the Museum of the Earth features the history of the earth in tiles
by Barbara Page and clayarter Linda Blossom -- also excellent.

In Williamstown, MA, the Clark Art Institute and the Williams College Art
Museum. It's a good town for restaurants and lodging. In nearby North
Adams, Mass MOCA is a strange but interesting museum. Route 2 eastbound
from North Adams has some spectacular views.

In Vermont, there are beautiful roads between Bennington and Manchester,
north to Rutland, through ski country to Wilmington and the Brattleboro
area. Brattleboro is my favorite Vermont town. Just north are Newfane
(archetypical New England village) and Putney. The Putney Inn is a great
place to stay. If you have time... the whole area north of Rutland --
Middlebury and Montpelier especially -- is worth exploring. East of
Montpelier, Norwich, VT, and Hanover, NH, are good destinations.

Remember... it's leaf season in New England, and the motels and roads get
very busy, especially on weekends. Columbus Day weekend is incredibly busy
in Vermont and western MA.

If you want more details, contact me offlist... I went to college in VT and
travel often in that area and the Ithaca area.

Enjoy the trip, Lois
