I have a few other suggestions as well. In the first
place I advise you NOT to take rt 6 all the way across
PA. It is very beautiful but you'll have to take
another week to do it! Or take a segment, like by
Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, somewhere near
Mansfield. Instead, if you come by or near Alfred
University in Alfred, NY (not Alfred College, across
the street) You may want to stop there. They have a
wonderful and busy ceramics/sculpture dept. and I
imagine they'll be glad to show it to you. From there
north to the Fingerlakes, any of them. I still love
Cayuga, esp. when you come north from Owego (not
OSwego) because the view when you ascend into Ithaca
is spectacular. Some wonderful wine-tasting places
along the lakes. In Ithaca I recommend the famous
Moosehead restaurant. This is located in the DeWitt
building downtown Ithaca, a restored warehous full of
shops etc. (Like an inside mall but with a-typical
shops) My highlight is the little gallery there, which
actually has real Hiroshige prints...! (and rather
affordable!)
In Vermont is a wonderful husband/wife pottery couple,
but you'll have to look it up on the internet for
directions. Todd (last name?) is a functional potter
who makes the most beautiful wares. His wife is Aysha
Pelz (hope I spelled that right) who makes things
that, I feel, dance. They have a new studio and I was
told (by Todd) that they would love to show it. Todd
taught at Alfred this summer and he's the gentlest
person!
When you first enter PA, and go north-west (didn't you
say Erie?) you may want to stop at Cooks Forest, north
of Clarion. A great place for paining many things, esp
above the Clarion River. The forest itself has great
hiking trails, including the larges stand of Virgin
Forest at least east of the Mississippi. Great hike to
see it, awesome place, wonderful people. Cute art-shed
(some nice stuff!) with the forest at the Sawmill
Center for the Arts. There is also a nice B&B there.

I could probably think of 10.000 more, but I have to
go and play with clay. Poor, poor me. Yes, I travel
much, here and abroad. Have a safe trip. The trees are
turning here (rather late, actually, in NE PA) and you
should travel during a fabulously beautiful time!
