Yes, after cleaning the old wash off your shelves, use 50 epk and 50 alumina
hydrate. I think you will be delighted- I switched to that mix about 5
years ago and am very happy with it.

Are you cleaning off the old flaked stuff off before adding more?

Try changing your recipe to 50/50 kaolin/alumina.

Lynn,

Here is Tom Coleman's kiln wash recipe:

60 Alumina Hydrate

30 EPK

10 Bentonite

Spread thin

It is the best I know.

Dear Lyn,

I believe you would be well advised to replace the flint portion of your =
kiln wash with Alumina Hydrate.

Whatever material you use there is always a degree of shrinkage during =
firing which will cause crazy paving.

My own opinion is that it is an advantage to have kiln wash peel from =
shelves. It is not necessary for the stuff to weld itself down tight. =
But if you do need tight adhesion then why not add two or three percent =
of your favourite potash felspar into the mix. Another thing you could =
do is to preshrink the stuff by calcining the Kaolin or substitute =
Molochite in its place.

Best regards,Ivor Lewis.
