I run two 6 cubic feet electric kilns 3x a week all school year long.
I use Lee's kiln wash from Axner Pottery.
It's $49 a gallon. It absolutely does not flake off.
Glaze blobs do pop off easy, and then you just do touch up if it needs it.
Make sure to scrape off any old kiln wash before applying the Lee's.
Wear a respirator.
Spending $49 on kiln wash more than makes up for itself in the time I
save from not having to re coat shelves or having a kiln and kiln room
floor full of kiln wash flakes.

Dear Fellow Clay Arters,
Amen to Lee's World's Best Kiln Wash. I bought my shelves new and covered
both sides with this kiln wash. Knew Lee Shank from years ago and knowing
his fanatic research methods, felt confident in using it. Bottom line, flip
shelves each time; kiln wash on both sides; very little upkeep. Some folks
might have no upkeep but I use a gerstley borate glaze that sometimes likes
to leap about in the kiln. $49.00 for the gallon is lots cheaper than
having a big blob of kiln wash in the middle of a $275.00 platter that cost
half my ligaments to throw.
