Hello all. I'm hoping some of you will feel compelled to help with the
following project, or will find the following index useful.

There's a wonderful index of American ceramic artists being compiled at
the NY State College of Ceramics at Alfred by the librarian Elizabeth
Gulacsy. When possible, she adds the year of birth/death to the
artist's name. Finding the birth year for currently working artists is
harder than you might think, but is useful in library land for
distinguishing between people w/ similar names (Gay Smith / Gertrude
Graham Smith =3D same person), as well as establishing their place in
history.

The following quote from Elizabeth describes the scope of the project:
"The focus of the project was to index illustrations of ceramic work
found in books in our collection. If there was additional data:
portraits, recipes, biographic or bibliographic information, we noted it
on the entry. We did not index books dedicated to a single artist as
those are easily found in the catalog."

(If you just want to see a sample, search on Bailey or Arnason or
Warashina.)

What I'm hoping is that those of you who have had your work published
will search to see if you are in there. If you are, and you would like
to send Ms. Gulacsy your year of birth &/or any corrections, it would
help make the index more complete. Please send additions or corrections
to Elizabeth Gulacsy, gulacsy@alfred.edu
with a subject line of NORTH AMERICAN CERAMICISTS. She is not
subscribed to CLAYART so she won't see replies sent to the list.

If you've been published but aren't in the index, it could mean that
they don't own the book, or they haven't indexed it yet. =20

Feel free to pass this on to other ceramic artists who don't subscribe,
and I hope you find the index useful.

Many thanks,
