questions for oxyprobe users

updated mon 24 oct 05

I'm not convinced that my OxyProbe is giving readings similar to other
users. Please help me determine what "normal" readings are by answering a
few questions for me. Please be scrupulous in your answers (decimal points,
sign, etc.)

All questions relate to the atmosphere reading only and reduction firing
only.

1) Are your readings positive numbers or negative numbers?
2) At what temperature do you get your first usable readings (please specify
C or F)?
3) What is the maximum numerical value that you can achieve at this
temperature?
4) What is the highest cone that you regularly fire to?
5) What is your atmosphere reading at that temperature?
6) What is the largest numerical value that you can achieve for reduction
regardless of damper setting, gas pressure, etc.?
7) What fuel do you use?

Just in case anybody's curious, my results are
1) My readings are negative numbers
2) about 800 deg C
3) about -0.1
4) ^10
5) About -0.65
6) -0.75
7) propane

Thanks,

Bruce Girrell
in gray northern Michigan where the leaves have hit peak, but we have no sun
to show them off. Currently firing at 1134 degrees, on the way to 1250
(atmosphere -0.545). Lots of glaze tests in this one. Cross your fingers.

Bruce,

I have a Bailey 18/12 also with an oxyprobe...and I've finally got copper
reds...many thanks to everyone's advice, especially Tom Buck and Jon
Singer!!!

1. Negative numbers
2. Start body reduction at 1465F ^010 start to bend..
3. I try to keep it at -0.62ish
4. ^10
5. -0.62 to -0.65
6. -0.75...but this creates too much smoke
7. Natural Gas

Ronda Shulenburg in Virginia Beach, where it is a beautiful fall day!!!
