Hi Gang,

In the comm. college ceramics class I'm currently enrolled in the teacher ( A Clayart lurker) & I have decided to experiment with cone six crystaline glazes for the first time. I've spent days going through every post in the archives & many websites found there. I have a few glazes in the "need to try" notepad. I wouldn't feel right starting a project like this ( It might jinx the whole thing) without some advice & hopefully help from Clayart. ;oD I'm looking for a cone 6 white or clear crystaline glaze that makes BIG crystals. Maybe all glazes CAN give big yummy.... I've seen mostly round ones but I've also seen a few that weren't. I don't know what they're called... crystal formations? Is the only way to get big formations a matter of dialing in the clay, glaze& kiln? I've been to Fara Shimbo's site & fell in lust with her "Vesuvius" glaze but it's a Cone 8-10. Does anyone know of a cone 6 look alike they would be willing to share? Any tips or advice would be greatfully
appreciated.

Thanks folks!

Hi,

It would take a while to really answer all your
questions and there is a lot of literature out there.
You may want to start collecting/reading articles from
past issues such as Ceramics Monthly, go to their web
site search the issues. My comm. college had it in the
library; perhaps yours has it too or some other mag.
That's how I started learning about them.

Also, for a quick and dirty run through, see the
following book:

Diane Creber, "Crystalline Glazes"

Good luck,

Fabienne

Hi, Logan,
You might give '/The Art of Crystalline Glazing (Basic Techniques)' /by=20
Jon and LeRoy Price a gander. It has all your firing schedules and=20
several ^6 recipes. Unfortunately, in my experience with low-fire=20
crystalline glazes, you probably are not going to get the large=20
'mushroom-like' zinc crystals in a low-fire wash the way you do with=20
^9-10. Most of the ^6 stuff I have done is very beautiful but looks more =

like little fan-shaped features or snowflakes.

There's a very lively discussion of cone 6 crystalline glazes here:

that you might find useful.
