glaze teting-funny "discovery"

steve jepson had an excelent idea in one of his pottery videos for glaze testing.

he got a wad of clay in his hand, and would squeeze it. it would smush in his hand, and he'd pound his fist on the table top. this makes a foot for the "mouse" in his hand. he'd stab a hole thru the part that comes out the top of his hand. (later a string goes thru this part to hang the test piece on a glaze bucket).

the value of this glaze sample is it's easy, you can stack a batch in lots of kiln spaces, they stand up, and the features enable glaze samples with high & low spots, sharp edges to review how glaze breaks over edges, etc. ~ and you can hang the test piece on a bucket. the part that comes out the bottom of your hand works as a natural runny glaze shelf.

see ya

storing a pencil that kept rolling away.

I rolled clay into rolls, maybe 1/2" diam. and bisqued
them, marking clearly on flattened sections.

Next I made a wad of wet clay and pushed a stick
section, broken from the larger rod, about 2", into
the clay, like a candle. (wet clays so it can stand
up).

I dipped the stick into the glaze to be tested, about
1/2" from the base of the stick to see runniness. If
so, it dripped onto the base lump.

It allowed me to put many testers in a smaller space
and store them upight as well. Wet clay fired just
fine, too.

Don't I feel spiffy! Go ahead, burts my bubble now: I
had my moment in the sun.
