Marianne -
No, no maple syrup down here. That's why I was dreaming about it. We lived
in the Amherst, MA area for six years, and bought maple syrup straight from
the farms. I remember one time in 1989 or 1990 when my son and I drove up
highway 202 towards Orange, MA to get a Christmas tree. It had snowed six
or eight inches the previous day, and everything looked perfect. The tree
farm was an old colonial-era place with a fine center-chimney house and
beautiful oubuildings, and it probably looked much as it had in 1800. There
were collection buckets on all the maple trees, and even in the dead of
winter there was something rich and productive about that farm. Morgan and
I went out into the field with a limb saw, picked out a tree, cut it down,
and dragged it back to the truck through the snow. We also bought a half
gallon of maple syrup and some excellent maple sugar candy. I have always
remembered day that as a quintessential New England experience - a Norman
Rockwell scene if there ever was one.
