Majolica: A
Workshop with Posey Bacopoulos

Saturday - Sunday, November 5 - 6, 10am - 4pm

This workshop will focus on altering wheel thrown pots and majolica
decoration. The pots will combine thrown, altered and hand built =
sections.
A variety of the altering techniques will be demonstrated, including =
several
oval forms such as bakers, pitchers and vases. Also different =
approaches to
handles, spouts and feet will be explored. Majolica is a glaze and
decorating tradition that began in the Middle East in the 9th century. =
This
majolica glaze tradition will be discussed and demonstrated. A variety =
of
decorating techniques using stains on majolica glaze will be shown. The
technical aspects of working with majolica will be covered. Handouts
containing this information will be provided and slides will be shown.
Students will have an opportunity to try the majolica decorating =
techniques
on bisque tiles that will be provided or on their own bisque terra cotta
pots.

Posey Bacopoulos is a studio potter working in New York City. She has =
been
making pots for more than 20 years. Her work has been shown in many
national juries and invitational exhibitions. It has won awards in the =
Tenth
Annual Strictly Functional Pottery National and in the International =
Orton
Cone Box Show. Her work has recently been published in several books
including The Ceramic Design Book, The Best of Pottery 2 and The Art of
Contemporary American Pottery.

Making Pots with Linda Christianson: A 5-day Workshop=20

Saturday - Wednesday, January 7 - 11, 10am - 4pm=20

This five-day intensive hands-on workshop will focus on functional wheel
thrown pottery. Linda will demonstrate throwing and altering forms. =
Several
approaches to handle, spout, and feet making will be explored.
Demonstrations, slides and hands-on participation will form the basis =
for an
understanding of how to look critically at our work and grow in our
understanding of form, surface, volume, and intent. Participants will =
have
one on one time with Linda and will be encouraged to identify and =
explore
their own personal work. Basic wheel throwing skills are required.

Linda Christianson is a studio potter in rural Minnesota. She teaches
workshops and exhibits her work nationwide and has received a National
Endowment for the Arts and McKnight Fellowships. She is "committed to
making a better cup each day" and is represented in "collections and
kitchens worldwide."
